physio placing acupuncture needles for back pain

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine stainless steel needles to stimulate the sensory nerves in the skin and muscles. The benefits include the relief of pain, reduced muscular tension and increased mobility. It can be combined with other treatments for sports injuries, back and neck pain, arthritis, headaches and soft tissue injuries.

Western medical acupuncture adapts traditional Chinese methods using modern evidence based knowledge

It works by stimulating the body to produce endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers), melatonin (promotes sleep) and serotonin (promotes well-being), together helping the healing process.

Typically up to 12 single-use, pre-sterilised needles are inserted in the skin for between 20 and 30 minutes. You may experience tingling. a dull ache or drowsiness. Sometimes the needles are rotated or a mild electric current is applied (electro-acupuncture) to increase the stimulation. A course of acupuncture usually provides longer lasting pain relief than a single session. Our acupuncturist Pinar Aydemir is happy to answer any questions you may have.
